Bunter, Billy

Bunter, Billy
A character created by Frank Richards, featured in a great many stories of school life which first appeared in 1908. He is a pupil at Greyfriars School and is known to his schoolmates as the Fat Owl of the Remove. He is fat, bespectacled, greedy, cowardly, and foolish, and a huge favourite with a vast number of readers. Modern children transfer his name to any fat child or person, using the name of his sister, Bessie Bunter, for girls and women. The Bunter stories originally appeared in The Magnet, but have been reprinted in hardback form many times. See also Fatty.
